Baladický příběh podle jedné z nejkrásnějších milostných novel Ivana Olbrachta "O smutných očích Hany Karadžičové". V malé židovské osadě na Podkarpatské Rusi žije dospívající dívka Hana Šafarová, zvaná Hanele. Vlivem nepřízně osudu a především kvůli vlastní naivitě příjde rodina prakticky o veškeré jmění. Hanele se rozhodne odejít spolu s dalšími mladými Židy do průmyslové Ostravy a tam se připravovat na cestu do země zaslíbené - Palestiny. Zamiluje se tu do zámožného obchodního cestujícího Ivo Karadžiče. Ten vystupuje jako bezvěrec a volnomyšlenkář. Nabízí Hanele sňatek, který však pro nábožensky přísně vedenou dívku nepřichází v úvahu. Pro svou lásku se dokáže Hanele odpoutat od víry svých předků a rozejít se s rodinou. Avšak nejen s ní, ale také s celou obcí, která jí dá pocítit hrůzu zatracení.
