Nelehký je život fenky Lajky na periférii ruského velkoměsta. Po svém odchycení je násilně přeškolena na průkopnici kosmonautiky. Záhy po startu Lajku do vesmíru následuje množství dalších zvířat překotně vypouštěných z Houstonu a Bajkonuru. Zvířata bloudí vesmírem až nakonec za pomoci Černé díry šťastně obydlí vzdálenou planetu. Po nějaké době jejich harmonického nikým nerušeného soužití s místními živočichy k nim však doputují i dva lidští kosmonauti a harmonický i ten holý život zvířat je rázem ohrožen.
