On Saturday the Prague Congress Centre as well as the broadcasting of Czech Television on CT 1 channel will be devoted to the 33rd annual Czech Lion Awards presented by the Czech Film and Television Academy (CFTA). On Saturday the most of the iconic statuettes can be awarded according to the number of nominations to the feature films Franz, Broken Voices, Caravan, Summer School, 2001, Promise, I’ll Be Fine and the miniseries The Well. Among the categories for acting the champions with two nominations are Anna Geislerová for her roles in the film Caravan and the series The Offspring, Elizaveta Maximová for the television film Mom and the series The Kiddo and Ivan Trojan for his roles in the films Franz and Invincibles. Within the framework of the 24 statutory categories the academics assessed in the final round of voting 32 films, television series and miniseries premiered in the year of 2025.
The ceremonial gala evening will be for the first time in the hall as well as on television hosted by the standup comedian Bianca Christovao. The main theme of the evening will be the future of Czech cinematography and the upcoming generation of artists. That is the reason why there will be among the presenters for example the actresses Antonie Martinec Formanová and Marika Šoposká, the actors Petr Uhlík, Filip Březina and Matyáš Řezníček or the director Adam Martinec. The creative supervision of the evening will be once again in the hands of the director Matěj Chlupáček. The ceremonial evening will be underscored by the music of the Slovak composer Adrián Čermák, who will be supported on the stage by the DJ DDK as well as a special music guest.
It will be possible to watch the live broadcast on 14th March from 8:10 pm on CT1 channel and also on iVysílání.
The statuette of the Czech Lion for the best feature film can be taken home by the creators of the films Franz, Caravan, Summer School, 2001, Promise, I’ll Be Fine and Broken Voices, which also have the nominations in the categories of the best director and the best screenplay. The nominations for the best documentary feature can be transformed into the statuette of the Czech Lion for the films What About Petey?, The Impossibility, Better Go Mad in the Wild, The Other One or Change My Mind. Among the nominated in the category of the best miniseries or series are the miniseries such as King of Šumava Season 2 - Agent Walker, Moloch Files and The Well, as well as the series OCTOPUS II and The Offspring. Five animated films will also fight for the awards: I Died in Irpin, Stone of Destiny, tiny film about rape, Tales from the Magic Garden and Wolfie. In the category of short films, the following films fought for the Lion in the second round of voting: The Wayfarer, Hey, Czechs!, Cultural Front, Dog and Wolf and First Patrol.
As much as eight categories of Czech Lions belong to the awards for actors that get presented for the main as well as supporting roles in films as well as series or miniseries. Their first Czech Lion can go to the starting actresses Kateřina Falbrová and Maya Kintera for the film Broken Voices or Sophia Šporclová for the television film Mom. The nominations in the acting categories can be recast into their first statuettes by Elizaveta Maximová, Josef Trojan, Oskar Hes, David Švehlík and also Juraj Loj. On the contrary, on Saturday more statuettes can join the “lion packs” of Anna Geislerová and Ivan Trojan as well as for example Jenovéfa Boková, Tatiana Dyková Vilhelmová, Hynek Čermák, Miroslav Krobot or Miroslav Donutil.
Within the framework of the ceremonial gala evening, the CFTA also annually awards the prize for the unique contribution to Czech film, which will go this year to Helena Bezděk Fraňková, the long-time director of the Czech Audiovisual Fund and respected expert in the field of film politics, public funding and international audiovisual arts. Every year the Czech Lion Awards are inseparably accompanied by the non-statutory Magnesia Award for the best student film, which is regularly awarded in cooperation with Mattoni 1873 and Czech Audiovisual Fund.
The nominated films for this year are also offered to their audience within the framework of an online film festival prepared in cooperation of the CFTA with the streaming platform DAFilms. The films can be watched by 22nd March online on www.ceskylev.cz and www.dafilms.cz. The films nominated for the Czech Lion awards will be also presented within the framework of an independent festival in the network of CineStar multiplexes, from 12th to 18th March. Up to Sunday 15th March, the last year’s presentation of the Czech Lion awards will be remembered by the outdoor exhibition of large-format photographs by the court photographer of the Reflex magazine Nguyen Phuong Thao right in front of the Prague Congress Centre.
